August 2000 Long-living log cabins – healthy living in the easy-care timber building Timber is the oldest building material of mankind. Wooden log cabins have survived several centuries under rough environmental conditions. Timber is a long lasting and resistant building material. Log cabins in perfect technology combined with attractive architecture offer natural and comfortable living conditions. The assumption that timber buildings are very care intense was not confirmed. In opposite. Timber buildings are long-living with easy care. Log cabins – built according to the RAL standards – can become more than hundred years old without problems. This confirms an expert’s opinion of the Austrian wood research institute (OEHFI) especially regarding to German log cabins. The facades of the log cabins produced of massif wood only require a coat of paint as scent protection which is to be refreshed occasionally for preservation. Even a plaster-covered house made of stones needs a fresh façade coat of paint from time to time. Also with increasing age of the log cabin the amount of work remains the same and the financial expenditure is manageable. Wood preservation and care Borax is well known and proven for wood preservation since age. The wood has to be covered twice by a 8% hot Borax liquid. The liquid performs fungicide, insecticidal and is moreover fire-retardant. The latest developments are using plant and wood extraction for wood preservation. Pyrethrum compounds are very useful as insecticide. Bark extract and hot plant oils (olive and linseed oil) are sanitary harmless and well proven natural products. You need to thin down the oils to 50% with oil of turpentine and put on hotly at approx. 70°C. An old proven method is also recommended: to brush off or wash the wood with hot wood ash or soda lye. If DIN 68 800 needs to be considered regarding wood preservation only products with a valid test certificate are legal to be used. The effect of a chemical wood preservation procedure depends on the used material and the applied procedure. The demands of DIN 68 800 are to be fulfilled at public or government supported buildings. Private builders are authorised, whether they preserve their timber houses and use legal or other products. Steinhauer GmbH offers their customers diverse wood preservation coating: Steinhauer GmbH is member of the German Massive Log Cabin Association e.V. and was certified regarding to the severe rules of the RAL (German institute for quality protection and marking). Steinhauer GmbH is authorised to carry the quality label. |
